In 2018, Hurricane Michael tore through Apalachicola, a historic gem on Florida’s northern Panhandle, leaving devastation in its wake. Years later, the rebuilding crawls forward at a heartbreaking pace.

Among the casualties: the “world-famed… est. 1991” Boss Oyster bar, the 24-room Apalachicola River Inn, Roseate Spoonbill Lounge, and Caroline’s River Dining Restaurant—a beloved waterfront complex that had welcomed locals and visitors for decades. I went to both Boss Oyster and Caroline’s while they were open… great experiences.

Shuttered after Michael struck, the property never reopened. Bankruptcy followed. In 2020, hope flickered when a Federal Bankruptcy Judge approved the sale to an investment group committed to rebuilding. Then the pandemic dealt another blow, halting all progress.

Hope surged again in August 2022 with the announcement of the Boss Oyster Marina project—the largest downtown riverfront development in two decades. The ambitious vision promised a 76-slip marina and a rebuilt 150-seat Boss Oyster restaurant to replace the lost landmarks: Boss Oyster, the Apalachicola River Inn, Caroline’s River Dining, and Roseate Spoonbill Lounge. Apalachicola businessman Steven Etchen, who manages White Sands Investment Partners and successfully rebuilt the nearby Gibson Inn, championed the deal.

In 2024, the Apalachicola City Commission reviewed a Flood Plain/FEMA Variance request as part of a plan to “renovate the historic Boss Oyster restaurant,” recommending approval. Then… silence. No updates I could find. No progress reports. Nothing.

Meanwhile, the buildings stand frozen in time, slowly rotting away. I photographed them in 2021 and 2022, wandering through the abandoned shells of what once thrived. Links to those haunting visits are at the end of this post.

We returned to Apalachicola at the end of January this year.

Once again, I walked through the decaying remains of Boss Oyster, a monument to promises not fulfilled and a community still waiting…

A colorful vintage sign for Boss Oyster restaurant, surrounded by palm trees and neglected structures, featuring text that reads 'Join the OYSTER REPUBLIC!' and dated 1991.

The main entrance…

A vibrant, colorful house entrance framed by palm leaves and tropical plants, leading to a shaded area with a view of the water in the background.
A red-framed window with multiple panes, some of which are broken, set against a bright green wall.
An interior view of a partially abandoned building featuring red walls, wooden floors, and peeling paint. There are broken doors and windows, a ceiling fan, and debris scattered across the floor.

Remnants of an Oyster Bar…

A colorful mural featuring two cartoon frogs sitting on lily pads, with the words 'Boss Oyster and Frog Level Oyster Bar' prominently displayed.

Kitchen pickup window…

An interior view showing a serving window with green pendant lights, framed by unfinished walls and decorative ivy on the right side.

Doorway to the back patio and its waterside remnants…

An open red door leads into a dimly lit corridor of an abandoned building, surrounded by overgrown plants and vines.
View of a weathered dock area with overgrown vegetation and a wooden fence bordering a calm waterway under a clear blue sky.
Overgrown yard with dry plants and a dilapidated wooden structure, featuring faded buildings in the background.

Outside…

An abandoned boat covered in vines and foliage, with the name 'Baby Oyster' partially visible on the side.
Across the street on the edge of Boss Oyster’s parking lot.
An old, weathered building with a metal roof featuring a large sign that reads 'OPENING SOON'. The facade shows signs of age with rust and peeling paint, and has several windows, some of which are boarded up. The structure has a porch supported by red posts and is surrounded by a grassy area.
The “Opening Soon” banner looks much the same as it did in 2021 when I first shot it.
The Boss Oyster entrance is off to the far left; the Inn registration lobby is far right.

Adjacent are the conjoined Apalachicola River Inn and entrance to Caroline’s Restaurant…
