Photography Scavenger Hunt… in 1988

Back in the days of yore… 1988… we were members of the Triad Photographers’ Guild. This group was made up of talented amateur photographers in the Greensboro/ Winston- Salem/ High Point area of North Carolina.

Occasionally, we held Photography Scavenger Hunts, where each member was given a list of items to capture. We had thirty days until the next meeting to complete the task. The images had to be slides, usually in color, and they had to be taken by the participants themselves. At the next meeting, our slides were collected and shown to the group. The images were judged by club members, votes were taken, and accolades were awarded to the winners.

It’s important to remember that this was before the digital age, and none of us had high-end color darkrooms. The slides were shown as they were captured, with minimal manual cropping done using pieces of cardboard taped to the slides. There was no extensive manipulation with high-falutin’ computers or software; what you shot was what you got.

There were ten Categories in May 1988, presented at the following June meeting.

Here were my entries:

1. Round

3. In My Backyard

4. Night Exposure

5. Flower

9. Food

Steam rises from the pot in a kitchen setting, with a wooden schedule board visible in the background. — Back then, I was the District Food Director (DFD), working from a large vending commissary in Greensboro that also handled ENP contracts, catering, and RTS services.

In the photo, one of our staff members is preparing hot meals for the Elderly Nutrition Program. These meals were delivered daily to sites throughout northern North Carolina and southern Virginia.

At that time, computers were relatively new to us, which explains the handwritten routing sign at the top of the image.

10. Danger

A scene from a retro-style video game featuring two characters in a dark urban setting with a barred background and scattered debris on the ground. — **A bit of explanation**: Leisure Suit Larry (LSL) was an early and highly popular adult-themed video game that was first released in 1987.

The main character, Larry Laffer (to the left), is a short, balding, middle-aged man who is known for his love of double entendres and his distinctive leisure suits. In the game, most stories revolve around his unsuccessful attempts to seduce young women. Often, following these failed encounters, Larry finds himself pursued by large men wielding weapons, as depicted in the image.

I was a fan and LSL gamer.

Identifier

Every submission had to be accompanied by an identifier of the photographer. Here was mine:

A corner of a room featuring wooden paneling, a black filing cabinet, a plaid couch, and framed photographs on the wall, along with a poster hanging above. — Although the image isn’t great, it captures the essence of the four pillars of my life at the time: **Family** (represented by the pictures), **Running** (displayed through the “Why Do I Run?” sign on the wall), **Work/Foodservice** (indicated by my office), and **Photography** (the image itself).

Pictures were taken in May 1988. They were scanned to digital October 8, 2025.
