Editor’s Note

This was our first “party cruise.” We traveled with friends on Margaritaville-At-Sea’s Islander, along with about 2000 other folks. It was a MUCH different experience from our other cruises! Fun, but very different.

Valentines Day in Progreso, Mexico

Progreso is a Mexican city in the northern state of Yucatan. It became a huge tourist port after the longest dock in the world was constructed. This created a deep sea port. BIG cruise ships dock at the end of the four-mile long dock and visitors bus into the city.

Our day was a crowded one as the dock was shared with a large Disney cruise ship. Lots and lots and lots of people.
Seagulls and Pigeons keep watch over the large Yucatan greeting.
A map of the disembarking area. Each little building is labeled “Shop,” because that is all there is to do.
Interestingly, the evacuation arrow points to the end of the dock where the ships are.
An eagle keeps a close watch over shoppers. Two of our team of intrepid travelers are in the background doing what they do best!
A display… with warnings… you do not see much in the ‘States.
The paint job of the bow of our ship. The Islander is a spirit-class ship built in 2000 that was once owned by Carnival. Margarita At Sea bought the ship in 2024. The ship was refurbished and received a full makeover by its new owners. The entire ship is themed after the late great Jimmy Buffet.

Trivia: under Carnival ownership, the ship was captained by Franceso Schettino, later the captain of the ill fated Costa Concordia. While the captain, he entered a harbor in Germany too fast and hit another Carnival ship. An omen of things to come?

(the orange strip is not AI-generated (snicker): it is a wall. I thought it added contrast to the shot.)

One response to “Exploring Progreso, Mexico: A Cruise Destination”

  1. We visited this port in January when Janice and I took a cruise on MSC Explora I . Ray Carr left Oceania and is now working on this ship.
We liked it so much that we booked five segments in August of 2026.

We will only be on Vista next year from Sydney to Abu Dhabi as segment passengers.
