Introduction to a new project

In days of yore, there were no cell phone or digital cameras. Everything was photographed on film. It was then converted to negatives or slides. Negatives, if processed by a company, were returned in envelopes, accompanied by small 4″x 6″ prints. Slides came back in small boxes.

My base equipment in 1983. Nikon FE2 camera. Note the film canister on the left.

Almost all the time, after viewing and reprinting, the slides and negatives were stored away. They were often never seen again. If you were a prolific photographer, there were many, many boxes and envelopes.

Then, along came digital, relegating film to history and niche photography. For me, the transition to digital occurred in 2003-2004. Along with the advent of digital were developed special scanners to convert film photographs to digital. First there were companies specialized in converting negatives and slides sent to them. Then hardware and software was developed to use yourself.

The conversion process and refining the results yourself is time consuming! So much so that I put it off until this year… after spending a long time gazing fondly at the boxes long stashed in a closet.

The results thus far have been mixed. Some of the slides did not fare well over the years, but they are all interesting.

So here we go…

Images at sunrise and sunset from the Outer Banks of North Carolina (Cape Hatteras, Ocracoke, Kill Devil Hills).

Photographed in early 1983. I scanned them to digital in January, 2025.

Not completely sure about what the fixation with small green boats was about!

This is just the start of what will be a lengthy project. Watch for more results!

Warning: Photo Geek stuff…

Scanner is a Plustek 8200i from OpticFilm.
Software is Silverfast9 to scan,
followed by Corel Paintshop, Topaz Photo AI, and Radiant Photo 2 to refine.
